The BMCC’s rooftops host an extensive photovoltaic system of 642 solar panels across both the congress and exhibition areas, with a total capacity of around 240 kWp and an annual output of approximately 210,000 kWh of green electricity.
This renewable energy powers on-site electric vehicle charging and reduces CO₂ emissions by an estimated 38 tonnes per year. T
he system was installed by local energy cooperative BeauVent, which funded the project through a citizen participation scheme — directly involving Bruges residents as cooperative members and investors in the city’s renewable energy future.
Sustainability added value: The BMCC’s solar installation does more than reduce its own carbon footprint — it actively contributes to Bruges’ ambition of cutting CO₂ emissions from municipal buildings by 50% by 2030.
By partnering with a community-rooted cooperative, the BMCC also connects its renewable energy production to local civic engagement, turning a technical infrastructure investment into a shared community asset.
