Barrier-Free Event

Physical accessibility was treated as an integral part of the event design, not an afterthought.

Table heights at the buffet, registration and all other service points were adapted for comfortable use by wheelchair users, and sufficient barrier-free circulation routes were provided across the site.

Where the venue itself presented limitations, practical solutions were put in place: ramps ensured step-free access at every entrance, and an accessible toilet container was hired on-site to guarantee adequate sanitary facilities.

Together, these measures ensured that every attendee could access all services and navigate the entire event independently and on equal terms — from arrival to the last coffee break. Practical guidance on accessible circulation routes and outdoor paths can be found in the guide Toeristische infrastructuur, toegankelijk voor iedereen by Visit Flanders (p. 19 onwards, available in Dutch only).

Sustainability added value: Accessibility is only meaningful when it extends to every aspect of an event — not just the entrance. Not every venue is perfectly accessible by default, but that is never a reason to exclude: by proactively identifying barriers and resolving them with targeted solutions, the organiser turned inclusive design into an inclusive experience, allowing every attendee to participate in every moment with the same ease, independence and dignity.
