Oude Vismijn is the careful reuse of one of the oldest market buildings in Ghent, with a history going back to the Middle Ages. Once one of the central fish markets of the city, the building has been carefully restored to preserve its historical character, while making it fully suitable for contemporary events. Heritage features have been kept and brought back to life, and modern functions, services, and event infrastructure have been integrated within the existing structure rather than replacing it. The result is a unique event venue that combines centuries of urban history with the practical requirements of present-day use.
Sustainability added value: Reusing an existing historic building avoids the demolition and the construction of a new one, which is by far the largest hidden environmental impact of any venue. Embodied carbon, raw material extraction, and construction waste are kept to a minimum, while the existing structure, foundations, and façades continue to deliver value for decades to come. By integrating modern event functions into a protected heritage site, Oude Vismijn keeps a piece of public history active and accessible, instead of letting it deteriorate or stand empty.
Soon, additional photos will be displayed inside Oude Vismijn itself to highlight its rich history.
