In 2023, the Bruges Meeting & Convention Centre (BMCC) installed two beehives on its green roof, now home to approximately 100,000 bees and producing around 80 kg of honey each year.

By creating a rooftop habitat for bees, the BMCC actively supports local biodiversity and natural pollination — two cornerstones of a healthy urban ecosystem. The hives are a visible, living part of the venue’s green roof, visible from the third-floor meeting rooms, and the honey they produce — branded as BeeMCC honey — can be offered by event organisers as a meaningful gift for speakers or VIP guests.

This initiative is part of the BMCC’s broader sustainability strategy, aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Sustainability added value: As Bruges leads the way as Flanders’ foremost bee city, the BMCC’s rooftop hives directly strengthen the local bee population, support natural pollination and boost urban biodiversity — turning an underused roof surface into an active ecological habitat with a tangible, local impact.
